Merakia

Merakia, is what Greeks use to describe doing something in the manner that Millennials claim to be doing at whatever it is they call "work. That is with soul, creativity, and love. However the Greeks mean it, while the Millennials are sucking the soma of a technarati uber-class that rakes in the dough while convincing their workers that seltzer is free if you work 80 hour weeks. But this has little to do with what Merakia does, which grills meats or cooks them on spits int he Greek Psistaria style. The owners Andreas and Renee Typaldos, work with Tassos Ballas to provide a menu that is authentic and fresh.

ASKA

Williamsburg

Located in an 1860’s warehouse building at the edge of the Williamsburg Bridge, Aska is a modern Brooklyn restaurant run by Michelin-starred chef Fredrik Berselius. Offering elevated multi-course dinners as well as a more casual bar and garden menu, all reflecting the best of what is available and in season. In the main dining room a $215 19-course menu or a $145 10-course menu. They would appreciate if you would indicate which menu you're interested in when making your reservation (in the special request box). They will also reach out to you prior to your reservation to confirm menu and all other details. If looking for a casual elegant meal without a reservatiuon their cellar bar and garden are walk-in friendly and offer an a la carte menu as well as house cocktails, wines, beer and non-alcoholic options.

Tsion Cafe

Ethiopian dishes provide the backbone of an eclectic menu that celebrates the diversity of flavors found in the cuisine of the residents of the neighborhood. Long-time resident of Harlem, owner Beejhy Barhany seeks to celebrate the vibrant intellectual and artistic history of Harlem. Check website for list of music, poetry, readings and performances.

With a focus on sustainable, market-driven ingredients, All Hands gives Executive Chef Pete Lipson a platform to cook up seasonally inspired dishes. Large place with two floors and two bars, it proves an excellent location for large groups and solo diners alike.

Victor Chavez, spent close to 30 years as executive chef at Smith & Wollensky. When he tried to retire he found he could not shake the desire to craft the perfect meal. So he returned to New York and opened his own joint in small West Village townhouse. With a smaller profile than his alma mater he is able to provide the personal touch that makes an exceptional dish.

Chef Gerardo Gonzalez, formerly chef at critical darling El Rey cooks up his fresh tasting Cal-Mex fare in the former karaoke hotspot Winnie's. Though no longer a space to burst into song, the food may solicit a few trills of joy and pleasure. For those that worry about a changing New York, the facade still has Winnie's old sign out front, though the interior is much lighter and cleaner.

A popular West Village omakase sushi parlour opened by 3 Masa vets with the goal to sell high quality fish at an affordable price. The specialty is temaki, sushi hand rolls. Each square of seaweed is bent into a U shape and arrive slotted in wooden holders. Most of the 39 seats are for walk-ins so be sure to arrive early, doors open at 5:30pm.

Petee's Pie Company

Petra "Petee" Paredez grew up in a pie-baking family. Raised in the bakery, learning that Thanksgiving required all-night baking frenzies. She takes her extraordinary skills to NYC, where, after a stint teaching special needs children she returned to her family tradition opening her own pie shop in the Lower East Side.
