Avra Estiatorio

Avra's delicacies are graciously served in a setting evocative of a splendid Greek home. Innovative Greek architect Yianni Skordas has turned the spacious Avra interior into a cozy dining environment which also includes a courtyard for al fresco seating in the summer. Everything about Avra is homey. From the flowers to the Jerusalem limestone floors, stonewash walls of the interior remind one of the traditional white walls and blue roofs often seen in postcards of Greece and its famous islands. Avra specializes in grilled seafood using only the freshest and most flavorful ingredients available. "Simple cooking is the best cooking," is the mantra of Executive Chef George Georgiades. A beautiful filet of lithrini from the Mediterranean or an American snapper from the Atlantic dressed only with extra olive oil, fresh herbs and lemon, or a classic octopus grilled to perfection - these are sample dishes that exemplify Avra and the essence of Greek cooking.

Little Pie Company

Hell's Kitchen

Word of mouth travels fast in New York City so it didn’t take long after the Little Pie Company opened its doors in 1985 for people to know that we were cooking up something good at our modest storefront on 43rd Street. Housed in the vibrant theater district in the Manhattan Plaza complex where many performing artists live, the Little Pie Company creates its star desserts in " a theater of baking". From the sidewalk, passersby can peer through large picture windows to see cooks in sparkling white caps and aprons baking pies, cakes and cookies --- peeling, slicing and arranging the fruit, pouring the fillings into crusts, placing the desserts into large steel ovens. Nearby rows and rows of pies with swollen golden brown crusts sit cooling on racks until they are snatched up to be taken home or consumed on the spot at the inside counter or at one of the outdoor tables, accompanied with a cup of coffee or a frothy cappuccino. The windows themselves are often decorated to celebrate seasonal holidays, reflecting a place with the friendliness of a neighborhood joint and the simple sophistication of a four-star patisserie. Berry pies in summer, pumpkin in fall, warm pecan in winter and strawberry rhubarb in spring, a variety of flavors to fit every mood, every month of the calendar. Remember a time when a home-made dessert equaled happiness? At the Little Pie company, it still does. Visit our Grand Central Terminal location, we are located in the lower-level dining concourse where seating is available to enjoy a slice of old-fashioned apple pie and a cup of coffee.

Madison Bistro

Murray Hill

This quiet and quaint bistro evokes those neighborhood haunts that make Paris the cuisine scene that it is. Far from the glam and glitter that marks so many eateries in this town, Madison Bistro evokes Parisian culinary tradition, comfort food and the joy of sitting down to a fine glass of wine and a bite to eat. Enter a room that feels as if it has been suspended in time, the kind of place writers and artists would frequent for a drink and a little conversation. A few tiny tables inhabit the front window area, just in front of the bar, where most of the action takes place. Here, Happy Hour features $5 cocktails and peek at the dining room on the lower, split level. The menu is inspired by traditional French plates, such as foie gras and charcuterie) with Mediterranean touches (taboule and grilled sardines). Try the sliced tomatoes with red wine reduction sauce and basil sorbet, or the grilled asparagus with sliced parmesan. The best items are those that appeal to the comfort-food lover, such as the rack of lamb, the braised short ribs, the bouillabaisse and the steak tartar. Desserts are not are as exciting as they could be. Better quality chocolate might help. The service is just what it needs to be for the place that it is; the staff do no aspire to be 3-star attentive. The best thing is that they let you talk and enjoy your meal without interrupting you to ask if you want more Pelligrino or other such thing. In short, you almost feel as though you are in your own home or among friends.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse - Park Avenue

Midtown

Former Peter Luger headwaiter and high-end steak impresario Wolfgang Zweiner's Midtown location, with a crafty, classic design and exception steak. After 4 decades of experience, it is fair to say that Wolfgang Zwiener learned his craft well. Taking the core principles from his years as Peter Luger’s head waiter, Wolfgang didn’t just duplicate an exceptional steakhouse; he improved upon it making Wolfgang’s Steakhouse extraordinary. Not only does Wolfgang’s serve phenomenal porterhouse steak (for one, two, three or more), but the atmosphere, the expanded menu, the service and the accessibility of the locations is appealing to even the most exciting diners. Wolfgang’s flagship Park Avenue location has enjoyed a full house since the day that it opened.

Cafe Gitane

Whether or not Cafe Gitane is charming, cozy and sophisticated or a den of Euro Trash depends on your perspective. Its seductive location, intriguing menu, and fine fare offer much charm. But the endless cellphone calls, the long waits and attitude of both patrons and staff alike sometimes create a charged atmosphere. Then again, it's infinitely more tranquil than nearby Cafe Habana.

Wolfgang's Steakhouse - Tribeca

Tribeca

After 40 years at fabled Peter Lugar in Brooklyn, the well-known headwaiter Wolfgang Zwiener went to Midtown. As they say, once you've succeeded in Midtown, it's time to hit Tribeca.

Kajitsu

Murray Hill

The former home of Ebisu has been transformed into the modestly-sized Kajitsu, where freshly made soba and delicately prepared vegetables honor the old Japanese art of kaiseki cuisine. A little slice of Japan in the East Village.

Fraunces Tavern

Financial District

Fraunces Tavern is a place of superlatives: open since 1762, George Washington bid farewell to his troops here after the Revolutionary War. That's reason enough to visit the museum here, have a drink and some meat or seafood dishes. Steeped in tradition and filled with tasteful antiques and oil paintings, you can't help but be captivated by history when at Fraunces Tavern. Billed as "New York's premier historic dining experience," you'll find it's a nice place for happy hour, a weekend meal, or for a visit during a walking tour of lower Manhattan. The restaurant and bar spaces are managed by Porterhouse Brewing Co., Ireland's largest independent Irish Brewery. The Porterhouse Bar offers a large range of small batch and specialty beers, serving traditional American food with a strong Irish influence. In the Tallmadge dining room you can enjoy a unique dining experience where wide plank floors and a blazing fire invoke the feeling of being back to the days of Revere, Jones, and Washington. The fare though, is a modern spin on American and Irish classics that will leave you full, satisfied, and reminded of times when the world was larger, and perhaps a bit simpler.

Croton Reservoir Tavern

Midtown

That turn-of-the-century feel with traditional American cuisine to match.

Shake Shack

Flatiron District

Famed restaurateur Danny Meyer opened the Shake Shack as a novel way to bring high quality summer food (burgers, fries, hot dogs, shakes) to the masses. The burgers are juicy and come on a great bun; the fries are crisp and tasty; and the caramel shakes and coffee shakes are especially delicious. Quality has its price; obviously Danny Meyer does not create McDonalds-style fast food. The seating can be incredibly pleasant or tedious; it depends entirely on who is dining in your proximity. Beer and wine are also available. Although it has been a tremendous success, it can take up to 20 minutes to get through the line during the busy summer lunch rush. Recommendation: Go at an off-peak time, such as 11:45 a.m. or 2 p.m. on a weekday, or on a Saturday. And if you are especially bored at your nearby office or you just fear having to wait in a long line, check out the Shake Shack Cam to see how many people are waiting.
